[Result "0-1"]
[ECO "B32"]
[Opening "Sicilian: Flohr Variation"]
1.e4 c5 {Hmm, My preparation strikes out again. The games I had for my
opponent were ones where he played 1...e5 or 1...c6 against 1.e4, so I had to
remember my Sicilian theory instead.} 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Qc7 5.Nc3 e6
6.Be3 a6 7.a3 b5 8.Be2 Nf6 {I thought it was a bit strange he hadn't played
Bb7, and looked for a reason why I couldn't just take on c6. He can't
recapture with the queen because of e5 and Bf3.} 9.Nxc6 dxc6 10.f4 Bb7 11.Bf3
c5 12.e5 Rd8 13.Qe2 Nd5 (13...b4 14.Bxb7 Qxb7 (14...bxc3 15.Qxa6 {This is the
move I missed when analysing 13...b4.}) 15.axb4 cxb4 16.Nd1) 14.Ne4 {It felt
right, but the computer engines don't like this move.} (14.Nxd5 Bxd5 15.Bxd5
exd5 {An interesting 4 vs 3 on one side of the board versus the same overlap
on the other side.}) 14...c4 15.O-O Be7 16.Kh1 O-O 17.Rad1 c3 18.b4 (18.Nxc3
{Just taking on c3 is OK.}) 18...a5 19.Nc5 {I thought for absolutely ages over
this move, as I was trying to make 19.Bc5 and other moves work, including a
possible exchange sacrifice on d5. Far too much time spent here that was
needed later in the game.} (19.Nd6 Nxe3 20.Qxe3) 19...Nxe3 20.Rxd8 Rxd8
21.Nxb7 {This was the wrong choice. Things have gone wrong here for White.}
Nxf1 22.Nxd8 Qxd8 23.Qxf1 axb4 24.axb4 Qd2 25.Be4 g6 26.g3 Bxb4 27.Qd3 Qf2
28.Qf3 Qc5 29.Bd3 Ba3 {I thought my opponent had been about to play 29...Ba5,
losing the bishop to a check on a8 - wishful thinking!} 30.Qe4 b4 31.Kg2 Kg7
32.h4 {My opponent suddenly had to worry about his kingside.} h5 33.Kf1 Bc1
34.Kg2 Be3 35.Kf1 Qb6 36.Kg2 Bd2 37.Qe2 {Much simpler was to reroute the
bishop to b3.} (37.Bc4 {Now Black can never play b3. Simple chess, but I was
unable to find these moves in time trouble.}) 37...b3 38.cxb3 Qxb3 39.Qe4 Qd1
{Here, with one move to make to the time control at move 40 and an extra 30
minutes, I blundered horribly. The position is still difficult, but I was down
to about 50 seconds and I froze, unable to decide between Bc2 or Be2 (I could
have just moved the king as well). With seconds left, I played Be2. Barry
David was filming this part of the game, along with my reaction when my
opponent made his winning reply.} 40.Be2 c2 {I had carefully avoided several
other traps like this, but missed this one. After a few seconds silently
bemoaning the blunder, I resigned.} {#R} 0-1
