[Event "Hamilton Russell "] [Site "National Liberal Club"] [Date "2019.12.04"] [White "Whiteley, James"] [Black "Campbell, Russell"] [Result "0-1"] [ECO "A07"] [Opening "Reti: KIA"] 1.Nf3 d5 2.g3 g6 3.Bg2 Bg7 4.O-O Nf6 5.d3 O-O 6.Nbd2 c5 7.e4 Nc6 8.c3 e6 9.Qe2 Qc7 10.Nh4 b6 11.f4 Bb7 {All about equal up to here.} 12.f5? {Better 12 e5.} exf5 13.exf5 Rfe8 14.Qd1 Ne5? {14 … g5 15 Nhf3 h6, which is better for Black.} 15.Ndf3 Nxf3+ 16.Nxf3 Rad8 {Better 16 … d4 as after 17 cxd4 cxd4 18 Nxd4 Qc5 wins} 17.Bf4 Qc8 18.fxg6 fxg6 19.d4 Ba6 {About equal again.} 20.Re1 Rxe1+ 21.Qxe1 Re8 22.Ne5 Bb7 23.Qd1 Ne4 {23 ... Nh5 is a bit better for Black.} 24.Qa4 cxd4 {Now it gets very tactical.} 25.cxd4 {The only good move is 25 Bh3! Qd8 26 cxd4 with equality. Now White should lose but it is not so clear.} Bxe5! 26.dxe5?? Qc5+ {White resigns due to the forced smothered mate 27 Kh1 Nf2+ 28 Kg1 Nh3+ 29 Kh1 Qg1+! 30 Rxg1 Nf3 mate. But what can White do? 26 Bxe5 is no good either, as 26 … Rxe5 wins a piece as 27 dxe5 allows 27 ... Qc5+ with the same mate as before. 26 Rc1 is more interesting though. At first 26 ... Bxf4 seems good, as 27 Rxc8 Be3+ 28 Kf1 Rxc8 leaves Black with more than enough for the Queen. However, White then has 29 Bxe4 dxe4 30 Qb3+ followed by 31 Qxe3 winning. However, the unexpected 26 ... Bc6 wins for Black, as if 27 Rxc6 Bxd4+! 28 Qxd4 Qxc6 leaves Black the exchange and a pawn up, with no further tactics.} {#R} 0-1
