[Site "Plovdiv"] [Date "2020.02.05"] [Round "0"] [White "Black, Richard"] [Black "Lee, Peter"] [ECO "B00"] [Opening "Nimzowitsch Defence: 2.Nf3"] {All comments by Peter Lee} 1.e4 Nc6 {The Nimzowitsch Defence. Interesting, but I am not sure it is that good.} 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e5 Ng4 {A possible alternative is 3 ... Nd5} 4.d4 d6 5.h3 Nh6 6.Nc3 {Here, or later, White can take the Knight on h6, but Black gets reasonable play.} e6 {My book “Play 1..Nc6!" by Wisniewski says 6 ... a6 is necessary to stop 7 exd6 Qxd6 8 Nb5 but my ancient Fritz says 6 … e6 is better (though not that good).} 7.Bb5 a6 8.Bxc6+ bxc6 9.O-O Nf5 {Avoiding a possible capture on h6 - White may have been better to take here earlier.} 10.Bf4 Rb8 11.Qd3?! d5?! {I was worried that taking on b2 might make me too much behind in development after Rb1, but it would have been best. The plan I had here was interesting, but probably not good.} 12.Na4 Rb4 {The idea behind 11…d5 but dubious.} 13.b3 c5 {Using the pin. Very complicated variations here.} 14.Bg5 {Better to play 14 Nxc5 Bxc5 15 c3! when White is better, after 15 ... Rb5 16 dxc5 Rxc5 17 Bc1.} f6 {I hadn’t anticipated 14 Bg5, but 14 ... f6 seems OK.} 15.Bd2 fxe5 {White should perhaps have taken on f6, as I have a trick here.} 16.Bxb4 e4! { The position is now assessed as equal by Fritz (white being a bit better before) but I liked Black.} 17.Qd1 {Fritz prefers 17 Qd2 being unworried about 17... exf3.} cxb4 18.Ne5 Qf6 19.Qd2 Bd6 20.f3? {This is a definite error. 20 f4 is the move but Black is still a bit better. Now Black is winning. } e3 21.Qd3 Bxe5 {21 … Nxd4 is better, but this is simpler.} 22.dxe5 Qxe5 23.Rfe1 {23 f4 is better.} d4 24.Nb2? {24 Qe4 is better. Regrouping the Knight is simply too slow.} Bb7 25.Nc4 Qg3 {Black’s attack is now irresistible.} 26.Qe2 Nh4 27.Rf1 O-O {It is not often that castling introduces the final, decisive, attacker.} 28.Rad1 Nxf3+ 29.Rxf3 Bxf3 30.Qe1 Qxg2# {An interesting game. There were many alternatives at many stages.} *
