[Event "Australian open 2019"] [Date "2018.12.28"] [Round "2"] [White "Prince Itty Panicker"] [Black "Ruari Coffey"] [Result "1-0"] [WhiteElo "1682"] [BlackElo "1400"] [ECO "B00"] [Opening "Owen Defence: 3.Bd3 e6 4.Nf3 c5"] 1.e4 b6 2.d4 Bb7 3.Bd3 {Hoping for black to play f5 and go into the Matinovsky gambit; a gambit which is, today, only better for white if they know how to play against it. (R.C)} e6 4.Nf3 c5 5.c3 Nf6 6.e5 Nd5 7.O-O Nc6 8.a3 {Preparing c4 which will limit where the knight can be placed. (R.C)} cxd4 9.cxd4 Be7 10.Nc3 Nc7 11.b4 d5 {I spent a while deciding on whether d6 or d5 was better. d5 creates a square far a knight on c4 but there isn't a quick way to do so. d6 undermines white's centre and may have given black better chances. (R.C)} 12.Be3 f6 {Castling at this point is quite dangerous as there are knight sacrifices galore, all with the idea to bring the queen in and mate the king. (R.C)} 13.exf6 Bxf6 14.Re1 O-O 15.Rc1 e5 {Overlooking that there is an x-ray pin on the c6 knight. Kh8 may also have been useful as after the queen recaptures, there is no discovered attack to the queen with check. (R.C)} 16.Nxe5 Bxe5 (16...Nxe5 17.dxe5 Bxe5 18.Qh5 {This was a common theme for the next few moves (R.C)}) 17.dxe5 Qh4 {Stopping Qh5 and still threatening d4 (R.C)} 18.Ne2 Ne6 19.Bb1 Nxe5 20.h3 {This is a mistake. Black now has a furious attack with 4 attacking pieces against 2-3 defending pieces. The other rook is also likely to make an appearance as well. (R.C)} Nc4 {Black missed the attack. (R.C)} (20...d4!! {Stockfish gives 5.2 advantage to black} 21.Nxd4 Bxg2!! {Breaking through. The knight on e6 is unable to be captured as after Qxh3, the game is over. (R.C)} 22.Qc2 Bxh3 {The engine says to give up the queen on h7. Black is completely winning (R.C)}) 21.Ng3 g6 22.Qg4 Qxg4 23.hxg4 Nxe3? {The knight was fine where it was. I was more worried about white having the bishop pair against an open king. (R.C)} 24.Rxe3 Nf4 25.Rc7 Rf7 26.Rec3 {This is slightly better for black according to the engine but I missed the correct refutation. (R.C)} d4?? {Loses a piece in broad daylight. Re8 and Black is solid if not better. (R.C)} 27.Rxf7 Kxf7 28.Rc7+ Ke6 29.Rxb7 Rc8 30.Ba2+ Kd6 31.Ne4+ Kc6 32.Rf7 {White can take the pawns. Black has to trade knights to push the passed pawn but the bishop will take the pawn and black will be several pawns down by that time. (R.C)} Ne2+ 33.Kf1 Nc3 34.Nxc3 dxc3 35.Bb3 a5 36.Ke2 Kb5 37.Bc2 axb4 38.axb4 Kxb4 {Two outside passed pawns that will take some time to push. White is winning but still has to be careful. (R.C)} 39.Rf4+ Rc4 40.Rxc4+ Kxc4 41.f4 b5 42.f5 gxf5 43.gxf5 b4 44.f6 b3 45.Kd1! {Pretty much any move wins for white but this is quite a nice way to do so. (R.C)} {#r} 1-0
