[Event "Roland vs Olsoy Match"] [Site "Boise, ID"] [Date "2012.07.09"] [Round "1"] [White "Olsoy, Peter John"] [Black "Roland, Jeffrey T"] [Result "1-0"] [WhiteElo "1698"] [BlackElo "1700"] [ECO "D53"] [Opening "QGD: 4.Bg5 Be7 5.e3 h6"] {Notes by Roland.} 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Be7 5. e3 h6 6. Bh4 O-O 7. Nf3 b6 8. cxd5 exd5 9. Bd3 Be6 10. O-O Nbd7 11. Rc1 c5 12. dxc5 bxc5 13. b3 Nb6 14. Ne5 a6 15. Nc6 Qc7 16. Nxe7+ Qxe7 17. Qf3 $2 {Immediately after the game, Peter and I both agreed that this was a blunder and it should have cost White the game.} g5 $1 18. Qg3 {Of course if 18.Bg3, then 18...Bg4 traps the Queen. This move is White's only hope, and I'm still convinced Black is winning even now.} Ng4 $1 {I haven't checked with a computer, but this move seems like a winner to me.} 19. Bxg5 Qxg5 20. f4 $1 Qg7 {This is forced, but it should still be enough to win.} 21. f5 $1 {A good move, after which I got confused and threw away the win!} Nxe3 $2 {I was still not adjusting to the new set of circumstances. I was completely oblvious to the situation. I saw the ...d4 fork and by golly, I was going to play it! But if I simply had gone 21...Ne5!, I would have won, or even 21... Bd7, both moves and Peter said he would have resigned. Now, not only do I throw my piece back, but with a worse position!} 22. Qxe3 d4 23. Qe2 dxc3 24. fxe6 {It is only now that I realize that I am actually losing. I took longer on this next move than any other of the game, but it is really hopeless. Black fights on galiantly, but White plays strong moves and avoids making any serious mistakes.} Kh8 25. Rxf7 Rxf7 26. exf7 Qxf7 27. Qe5+ Qg7 28. Qxc5 Nd7 29. Qxc3 Ne5 30. Bxa6 Qa7+ 31. Kh1 Re8 32. Bb5 Re7 33. a4 Kh7 34. Re1 Qc7 35. Qxc7 Rxc7 36. h3 Nf7 37. Rd1 {And this is a good place to resign. White has everything under control and a win is an easy matter. What an exciting game to start the match, though. I am hopeful that we will have games this exciting throughout the match.} {#r} 1-0
